Zinc Price OutlookZinc prices fell over the previous month, chiefly on a jump in inventories and demand worries in China. On 14 February, zinc traded at USD 2,135 per metric ton, which was 10.4% lower than on the same day last month. Moreover, the price was down 6.4% on a year-to-date basis and was 17.5% lower than on the same day last year. Surging stockpiles and sinking Chinese demand amid the coronavirus outbreak put downward pressure on prices for the metal used to galvanize steel. Inventories at warehouses certified by the London Metal Exchange rose, while stocks also piled up in Chinese warehouses, partly due to transport restrictions aimed at halting the spread of the coronavirus. Meanwhile, fears over sluggish Chinese demand and further spreading of the virus weighed on market sentiment.
