Haiti Economic Outlook
February 18, 2020The economy has taken a beating in recent months, hit by political uncertainty, civil unrest and elevated inflation, which has in turn led to hefty layoffs, an interruption in vital remittance inflows and a collapse in domestic demand. Exacerbating matters, drought late last year dampened food production, increasing the number of people at risk of starvation. On the political front, President Jovenel Moise continues to govern by decree after Parliament’s mandate expired in mid-January, which could inflame social tensions. In its recent Article IV consultation, the IMF urged the restoration of political and macroeconomic stability, a shift in spending towards social programs and investment, and the preparation of a FY 2020 budget.
Haiti Economic GrowthThe economy is likely to shrink this year, dragged on by weak business sentiment and political uncertainty. Downside risks include vulnerability to natural disasters and a possible intensification of social unrest, while the potential restoration of political stability poses an upside risk to the outlook. FocusEconomics panelists foresee an economic contraction of 0.1% in 2020, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast, before growing 0.8% in 2021.
